A good rule is to always notify someone of your plans if you are going to visit the interior of Iceland, hike on the glaciers or explore the uninhabited parts of the country! You could notify your hotel, the police station, friends etc.
Don't wander off alone in the middle of nowhere without at least someone knowing about your travel plans and intentions. Far too many foreigners ignore this simple rule at their own risk. If they do get lost, they are in deep trouble.
